Matthew -- Errors 92-98
#92
Matthew 18: (KJV)
15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and
tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee,
thou hast gained thy brother.
Against thee is missing from the earliest extant manuscripts.
#93
Matthew 18: (KJV)
15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and
tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee,
thou hast gained thy brother. 16 But if he will not hear thee, then take
with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses
every word may be established. 17 And if he shall neglect to hear them,
tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him
be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. 18 Verily I say unto you,
Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever
ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Compare to Matthew 7: (KJV)
1 Judge not, that ye be not judged. 2 For with what judgment
ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall
be measured to you again.
Sounds like judging to me.
#94
Matthew 19: (KJV)
9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except
it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and
whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
Same error as #56, a contradiction of Deuteronomy 24:1.
#95
Matthew 19: (KJV)
10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with
his wife, it is not good to marry. 11 But he said unto them, All men cannot
receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.
Jesus says its acceptable to choose not to get married. The result
of not having any children is a violation of Genesis 1:28 (JPS)
And G-d blessed them; and G-d said unto them: 'Be fruitful, and
multiply, and replenish the earth
If Christianity believes that the story of Adam and Eve has eternal significance
for all humanity then why wouldnt the command to Adam and Eve to
procreate also have
eternal significance?
#96
Matthew 19: (KJV)
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none
good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the
commandments. 18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no
murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt
not bear false witness, 19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou
shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Compare to 5: (KJV)
17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets:
I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18 For verily I say unto you,
Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass
from the law, till all be fulfilled. 19 Whosoever therefore shall break
one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called
the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them,
the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say
unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness
of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom
of heaven.
Sounds like a lot of jots and tittles have passed from the law between
5:17 and 19:17.
#97
Matthew 19: (KJV)
17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none
good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the
commandments. 18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no
murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt
not bear false witness, 19 Honour thy father and thy mother:
Compare to 10: (KJV)
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not
to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I am come to set a man at variance
against his father, and the daughter against her mother
Contradictory messages for the potential follower regarding relations
with parents.
#98
Matthew 19: (KJV)
28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which
have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in
the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging
the twelve tribes of Israel.
Not literally true since presumably Judas was also being addressed. I
present this error somewhat reluctantly because Jesus had a reason to
conceal his knowledge at this time of Judas future betrayal but
the author could easily have avoided the literal error by using wording
such as ye which follow me.
Justice, Justice, Shalt Thou Follow
They asked the holy Yehudi: Why is it written: Justice,
justice, shalt thou follow? Why is the word justice
repeated? He answered: We ought to follow justice with justice,
and not with unrighteousness. That means: The use of unrighteousness
as a means to a righteous end makes the end itself unrighteous; injustice
as a means to justice renders justice unjust.
