Matthew -- Errors 64-70
# 64
Matthew 10: (KJV)
7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
False prophecy.
#65
Matthew 10: (KJV)
15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the
land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
In the Tanakh Sodom and Gomorrha are cities. No other Christian Bible
author refers to them as anything other than cities.
#66
Matthew 10: (KJV)
23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another:
for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel,
till the Son of man be come.
False prophecy.
#67
Matthew 10: (KJV)
35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father,
and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her
mother in law.
Contradicted by Deuteronomy 5:16 (JPS):
Honour thy father and thy mother, as HaShem thy G-d commanded
thee; that thy days may be long, and that it may go well with thee, upon
the land which HaShem thy G-d giveth thee.
#68
Matthew 11: (KJV)
10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger
before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
Doesnt agree with any known version of a passage from the Tanakh.
Malachi 3:1 of the Masoretic text reads:
(JPS) Behold, I send My messenger, and he shall clear the way
before Me; and the L-rd, whom ye seek, will suddenly come to His temple,
and the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in, behold, he cometh,
saith HaShem of hosts.
The closest you can come to Matthews quote from the
Tanakh is to take the Christian Greek translation of Exodus 23:20:
Behold, I send my messenger before thy face
and then add to it this portion of the Masoretic text of Malachi 3:1:
(JPS) and he shall clear the way before Me.
Then change clear to prepare and Me
to thee and voila! A perfect prophecy fulfillment from the
Tanakh.
#69
Matthew 11: (KJV)
10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger
before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. Verily I say
unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater
than John the Baptist:
The author of Matthew is quoting Malachi and saying that John the Baptist
was being prophesied by Malachi. But Malachi explicitly says that the
quote refers to Elijah.
Malachi 3:23 (JPS):
Lo, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before the coming of
the awesome, fearful day of the Lord.
#70
Matthew 12: (KJV)
3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when
he was an hungred, and they that were with him; How he entered into the
house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him
to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?
The author of Matthew is referring to I Samuel 21:2 (JPS):
Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest; and Ahimelech
came to meet David trembling, and said unto him: 'Why art thou alone,
and no man with thee?' And David said unto Ahimelech the priest: 'The
king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me: Let no man know
any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded
thee; and the young men have I appointed to such and such a place.
But the previous chapter makes clear that David was making up his story
and came alone (really) to Ahimelech. I Samuel 20:30: (JPS)
Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto
him: 'Thou son of perverse rebellion, do not I know that thou hast chosen
the son of Jesse to thine own shame, and unto the shame of thy mother's
nakedness? For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the earth, thou
shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch
him unto me, for he deserveth to die.'
Good Deeds
Everyman has three friends: Family, Property and Good Deeds. When his
time comes to depart, he pleads with them to save him. Family replies,
"No man can redeem his brother". Property replies, "Riches
profit not in the day of wrath". But Good Deeds respond: "Go
in peace. We shall not desert you. We shall accompany, yea, precede you
on the way, for it is written, "Thy righteousness shall go before
thee".
